An icon of the advertising world, the New Business Guru, Stuart Hall Sanders, 83, of Raleigh, North Carolina passed away on January 29, 2024. He was born on June 3, 1940, in Richmond, Virginia, the son of the late Stuart Sanders II and Adelina Sanders. Passionate about history and his home state of Virginia, Stuart proudly served as a Colonel in the State of Virginia Militia.
Stuart was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School (1959) and the University of Virginia (1962), where he was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. After graduating from UVA with a degree in history, but a greater love for sales, writing, and promotions, he joined General Electric’s management training program in Washington State.
His new business prowess caught the attention of industry headhunters, and he was recruited to join Cargill Wilson & Acree, at that time the largest agency in the Southeast. Stuart left Cargill and joined the Stuart Ford Agency. The next year, the firm was honored by ADWEEK magazine as the fastest-growing agency in the Southeast. Later he worked at a subsidiary of the Martin Agency in Richmond as director of account service and head of new business. The agency grew rapidly, and in 1987, Stuart decided to take his new business expertise to other agencies as a consultant and opened Sanders Consulting Group in his hometown.
As Stuart’s consulting business grew quickly, he gained an international reputation as a new business expert, with nearly half of his business coming from overseas assignments dealing with a variety of client-retention and growth issues. He helped pioneer the agency restructuring movement, the swing to teams, and the growth of branding as a key growth strategy for advertising agencies.
Known for his larger-than-life personality and love for storytelling, bass fishing, and Super Bowl parties, Stuart was also the instigator of fireworks at the Holden Beach Fourth of July family reunions. As a devoted member of Christ Fellowship in Boynton Beach, FL, he practiced his faith with fervor. Stuart found joy in organizing grand parties, sharing cinematic moments with his grandchildren, and exploring new destinations with Sue. His passion and encyclopedic knowledge of history kept all historical guides on their toes as they traveled the world.
Stuart is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Sue G. Sanders, and his children: Virginia (Jenny) Eggleston (David) of Raleigh, NC, Robert Sanders (Janae), of Chesapeake, VA, and his stepchildren: Jeffery Gift (Penny), Jimmy Gift (Ansley), and Jan Boyer (Bill). He was also a cherished grandfather to Brandon Boyer (Whitley), Jason Boyer (Ashley), James Eggleston (Daniela), Hunter Eggleston, Caroline Dempster (Ian), Jennifer Gift, Rebecca Gift, Joshua Gift, Shannon Ponce (Alfonso), Addison Sanders (Bethany), Elizabeth Sanders, Aiden Sanders, Jimmy Gift (McLean), and Ann Hammond MacPherson (Ian). Additionally, he was a beloved great-grandfather to Bodhi Boyer, Vayda Boyer, Riley Boyer, Olivia Boyer, and Elliot Gift. Stuart is also survived by his siblings: Jessica Jones (Addison) and Taylor Sanders (Barbara). He is predeceased in death by his stepdaughter, Jill Lockhart.
