The Rev. Thomas Alexander Gregg

The Rev. Thomas Alexander Gregg passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Rev. Gregg was born in Laurinburg, NC of Ann Lynn Carothers and James Maxwell Gregg. He graduated from McCallie Military Academy and Davidson College. He served in the Armed Forces Military Police in the European Theater during WWII where he met his wife, of 65 years, Margaret Sax, of Luxembourg.

After the war Gregg left his family’s hardware business in Wilmington, NC to attend a Virginia Theological Seminary, from which he earned a Master of Divinity degree and was ordained to the Sacred Order of the Priesthood in the Episcopal Church in 1968. He served parishes in the dioceses of Eastern North Carolina and South Carolina. Having earned a certificate in psychotherapy he founded a private counseling practice in lower South Carolina and served as a bi-vocational priest for nearly three decades. The Rev. Gregg was a charter member of the Association of Marriage and Family Counselors of South Carolina; and later appointed to the board by Governor Carroll Campbell.

The Rev. Gregg is survived in death by his wife, Margaret, daughter, The Rev. Rowena Gibbons, son, Jean Paul Gregg, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His parents, two brothers, an infant son, and daughter, Catherine Alexander Gregg McDuffie, precede him in death.

The Burial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Cary, NC at 2:00 pm on Monday January 23; the Rev. John S. McDuffie will be the Celebrant. A reception will follow at Glenaire Retirement Community. The Committal will take place at Oakdale Cemetery in Wilmington, NC at a later date.

The entire Gregg family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of Glenaire, with special thanks to the skilled nursing staff, for their kindness and the excellent care given to the Rev. Gregg during his long illness. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Endowment Fund or the Glenaire Foundation.
