Billy was born and raised in Raleigh. He joined the Navy in 1945 and was honorably discharged on December 3, 1948. Two days later, he married the lovely Peggy Phillips and moved to Cary. He worked for the Department of Transportation, General Services Division until his retirement in 1990. In 2015, Billy was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years. He is survived by his four children, Tim, Sharon, Amy and Dave as well as ten grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and 3 nephews.
Billy loved the town of Cary and served on several town boards in his younger years. He was a charter member of the Cary Area Rescue Squad and proud Cary Volunteer Fireman for 27 years. He was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he and Peggy attended regularly until their declining health. Owning The Cary Stop hot dog stand at the NC State Fair was one of the highlights of his life. Every October, friends & family would gather to enjoy one of Billy’s famous foot long dogs. After over 4 decades of fun, and many memories, he reluctantly gave up his spot at the fair.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Morningside of Raleigh and Transitions LifeCare for the kindness and care given. He was blessed to have the love & support of many special friends, who visited with him over the years. God gives us comfort in the form of good friends, may His peace be with you and His love never end.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 15th, 2016, from 12:30 – 2:30 pm, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. A graveside committal service will take place the same day, at 3:00 pm, at Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery, in Raleigh.
