

Shirley Jean Curtis, lifelong resident of Colorado, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2011, in Castle Rock, Colorado. Born in Fort Morgan, she spent her childhood between a ranch near North Park and Loveland. Upon graduation from Loveland high school in 1949, Shirley enlisted in the U.S. Army. She gave 23 years of honorable service to her country, retiring in 1972. Her service to the nation took her to Austria, Germany, Italy, and many locations within the United States. Her last assignment was at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center. From 1972 until 2002 Shirley lived in Aurora, eventually moving to Littleton, Acres Green. Upon retirement, Shirley worked as a law enforcement officer at Denver Mint and as a private contractor doing electronics and refrigeration work. Shirley was active in Douglas County politics as well as being heavily involved with the fight for Veterans’ rights. She was a staunch advocate and a strong voice for the rights of women veterans who many times, are the forgotten veteran. Shirley spent her last years as a resident of Castle Rock Care Center. She is preceded in death by her parents Dean and Irene Curtis.
A Graveside services was held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver on January 7, 2011 with a memorial service at 11:30 AM at Olinger Andrews Caldwell Gibson Funeral Home in Castle Rock also on Friday.
