Terry Lutz, 83, of Guffey Colorado, passed away on November 9th after a short battle with Covid 19.
Terry was born on November 20th, 1936 to Wendel and Marie Lutz in Henrietta, N.Y. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and fulfilled a 4 year commitment working mostly as a sonar man on submarines. After the military, Terry went on to study electrical engineering at The Rochester Institute of Technology. While still at the university he enlisted as a co-op student with IBM. They later offered him a full-time position, and he ended up working his entire career with IBM. While still in the Navy, he met and married Mable Jane Riese. They went on to have 3 children; T.J., Heidi, and Erik. After the birth of their 3 kids, Terry and Mae moved the family to Nederland, Colorado where he continued working and commuting down Boulder Canyon to IBM.
Terry always wanted the life of a cowboy, and shortly after moving to Nederland, purchased horses to populate his property there. He was an avid horseman and outdoorsman, loving nothing more than to explore and hunt in the Colorado back country on and off horseback.
Terry also had a passion for giving back to the community. He was very involved with the local Lions Club, including acting as president for many years, as well as being active with the local catholic church.
In 1989 Terry and Mae moved outside Austin Texas so that he could continue his career with IBM, moving all of his horses and other animals down with them.
In 1995 upon his retirement from IBM, Terry and Mae returned to Colorado, settling outside of Guffey, Colorado in the center of the state. Terry continued his activism in Woodland Park as he led up the “Help the Needy” group through the church there. He was also an active member of the catholic church in Cripple Creek.
Following Mae’s passing in 1998, Terry married Margaret Eileen Weatherly in 2001.
Throughout his life, anyone who knew Terry knew that he was constantly busy with the pursuit of gathering, cutting, and splitting firewood to burn in his fireplaces, as he loved a live fire. He was always enlisting the help of his kids and anyone else who would “volunteer”. He must have gathered a thousand cords during his lifetime. His favorite saying was “Wood is Wealth”. His family and friends will miss him immensely.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents Wendel and Marie Lutz, wives Mabel Jane Riese and Margaret Eileen Weatherly and nephew Andrew Stevens.
Terry is survived by his sister, Sharon (Thomas) Stevens, Walworth, N.Y.; his children, T.J. (Diane) Lutz, Idaho Falls, ID.; Heidi (Ken) Terrell, Conifer, CO.; Erik (Jolie) Lutz, Sedalia, CO.; seven grandchildren, Cody (Riann) Lutz, Salt Lake City, UT.; Austin Lutz, Salt Lake City, UT.; Chayce Lutz, Castle Rock, CO.; Riese Lutz, Sedalia, Co.; Payton Terrell, Conifer, CO.; Parker Terrell, Conifer, CO.; Bryce Lutz, Sedalia, CO.; step daughters, Charme (Phil) Krauth, Canon City, CO.; Robyn (Rock) Canda, Westcliffe, CO.; nephew Peter (Rebecca) Stevens, Celebration, FL.; niece Katie Stevens, Walworth, N.Y.; step-grandson Aaron (Andrea) Stubel, Ridgeway, CO.; and their child, step-great granddaughter Alena.
