Ruth Volz, a trailblazing professional, devoted mother, and cherished matriarch, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2025, in Centerville, Maryland. She was 100 years old, having joyfully celebrated her centennial birthday this past July surrounded by family and friends.
Born on July 22, 1925, in Baltimore, Maryland, Ruth was the daughter of the late Frank and Marie Miller. She was raised in the Catholic faith and remained deeply spiritual throughout her life, speaking to God every night with unwavering devotion.
Ruth was a proud member of the first graduating class from Catholic High School of Baltimore in 1943. Her pioneering spirit led her to break barriers in the professional world as the first female Claims Adjuster for State Farm Insurance—a position she held with distinction until her retirement. Her career not only marked a significant personal achievement but also paved the way for future generations of women in the workforce.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ruth was an active and engaged community leader. She served as President of the 3rd District Democratic Club and held leadership roles as past President of both the Chesterfield Condo Association and Chesterfield Homeowners Association. Her commitment to civic involvement reflected her strong sense of responsibility and dedication to improving the lives of those around her.
Ruth’s personal life was marked by resilience and love. After losing her beloved husband George J. Volz at the young age of 33, she courageously raised their three daughters on her own. Her strength and determination were matched by a loving and generous heart that left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
She is survived by her daughters Mary Wentworth of East Greenwich, Rhode Island; Elaine Hohman of Pasadena, Maryland; and Nancy Gracie and son-in-law Gary Gracie of Chestertown, Maryland. Ruth also leaves behind six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren who will carry forward her legacy with pride.
Ruth found joy in life’s simple pleasures—traveling with friends, playing Solitaire on her computer, solving crossword puzzles, and engaging in spirited games of Scrabble. Her personality was vibrant: feisty, outgoing, ornery at times—but always fun. She brought laughter and warmth wherever she went.
A graveside service for immediate family will be held at Druid Ridge Cemetery, located at 7900 Park Heights Ave, Baltimore, MD, 21208, United States. The service is scheduled for December 3, 2025, at 11:00 am.
Ruth Volz lived a century filled with courage, compassion, and conviction. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
