Dorothy graduated Valedictorian from Long Branch High School in Long Branch, NJ. She graduated from Middlebury College Vermont in 1949 with a BA in English Literature where she was a Phi Beta Kappa Key and Mortar Board Honors recipient.
She started working for the Denver Post in 1962 where she worked in the Sports Department and specialized in 40 different sport disciplines. Dorothy was the first female sportswriter working for a major metropolitan daily newspaper. She retired from the Denver Post in 1983.
During and after her time at The Denver Post, Dorothy served on many sports and community boards, held numerous offices, helped found several organizations, and received numerous media and recognition awards. She was in the first female membership class of the Denver Press Club, was the first female member and first female president of the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Selection Panel. She was later elected to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 for sportswriter. Dorothy was a charter member and a 44-year board member of the Sportswomen of Colorado which annually presents the Dorothy Mauk Pioneer Award in her honor. She was inducted into the Colorado Tennis Association Hall of Fame in 2002.
In addition to her ongoing sports affiliations, she was a past president of the Colorado Symphony Guild as well as past two-time chair and trustee since 1987 of the Young Musicians Foundation of Colorado. She was also a member of the Littleton United Methodist Church and traveled extensively abroad and in the United States with her husband Dallas.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Dallas Mauk, who passed away in 2013. She leaves to cherish her memory three children, Dalean Janes (Lonnie) of Colorado Springs, CO, Paul Mauk of New York and Tim Eccles (Dee Dee) of Overland Park, KS; six grandchildren, TJ and Tyler Eccles, Sarah Davis (Todd), Eliza Voss (Ryan), James Mauk and Madeline Mauk; and four great grandchildren, Gabriel and Fiona Davis, Parker and Scarlett Voss; as well as many other loving family members and friends.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Monday, December 3, 2018 from 5pm – 7 pm at Olinger Chapel Hill Mortuary. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Littleton United Methodist Church Chapel, 5894 S. Datura St., Littleton, CO 80120.
