Gordy was born on May 26, 1933, in Hillsboro, Kansas to Manuel and LaBerta Sieker. The youngest of four children, he was raised in Claflin, Kansas and graduated from high school in 1951. After serving in the Air Force for four years, he attended Kansas University, graduating in 1960 with a degree in mechanical engineering. That same year, he met and fell in love with a young elementary school teacher from Illinois named Sara Blakely. In 1961 they married and moved to Denver where they lived for all but six years of their married life. He worked first for the Bureau of Reclamation, then later for the Defense Department as Chief of Contracts.
Colorado was Gordy's kind of state and through the years he enjoyed many activities like camping, fishing, climbing Fourteeners, canoeing, playing volleyball and tennis, and coaching soccer. He loved sunshine, crisp blue-sky days, the mountains, spending time at the family cabin, watching football, cheering his loved ones from the sidelines, joining his Calvary friends every Sunday for study and worship, and visiting his many friends. Gordy was a builder – he had a passion and a real talent for designing and making things – from the log cabin he helped build and where he loved spending time, to special pieces of furniture, oil paintings and model ships. But, his favorite creations were those of a loving family and strong friendships that were built over the years. Above all, he loved his wife, children and grandchildren and was most happy and content when he was spending time with them.
Gordy is survived by Sara, his cherished wife of 56 years, and his beloved sons and their families: John (Annie) and their children David, Johnny, and Sara Jane; Steve (Susan) and their children Katie and Luke; his firstborn son, Blake, who died in 2014, and his children Justin, Andrea, and Jeremy and their mother, Mary. He is also survived by one brother, Will (Beverly) of San Marcos, CA and a caring extended family of nieces and nephews.
He would want to be remembered for his generosity, his sincerity, his loyalty to his country, and most of all his faithfulness and dedication to family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in Gordon's honor to: Calvary Baptist Church of Denver, 6500 E Girard Ave, Denver, CO 80224.
