Above all things, dad was passionate about his faith in god, his family and friends. Herman Royce Davis passed away peacefully at his home in Centennial Colorado on April 16, 2023. There, at his bedside, to guide him home were a holy host of others; his wife, family and the Lord Jesus Christ. All of whom preceded him to his well-earned place with God.
Dad was born to Carrie Lee (Sessums) and Herman Huntley Davis in Grady County, Marlow Oklahoma on June 9, 1935. He was the youngest of three children. His two older sisters, Gertrude and Imogene kept a close eye on their younger brother as they grew up on a modest farm just outside of town.
At an early age, dad embraced life with enthusiasm and a competitive spirit that continued throughout his life. Growing up in farm and ranch country in rural Oklahoma, he was member and successfully competed in his school’s chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA). He was a two-sport letterman for his local high school team, the Marlow Outlaws. While he loved football his sport passion was baseball. In fact, he continued to play baseball beyond high school as a second baseman for a semi-professional team from Oklahoma City. Even after a successful 40-year career as a salesman, he spent his next 25 years enjoying another sport fancy – golf. He met and enjoyed many of his late in life friends, playing golf and working as a starter and ranger for the Saddle Rock Golf Course in Centennial Colorado.
Our family is so fortunate that dad’s competitive energy carried over to his personal life. Such a disciplined approach led to a successful courtship and eventual 68-year marriage to his beautiful wife (our mom), Virginia Muriel (Spears) Davis. As they grew together as a couple, so did their family. Soon the two of them became five. Of his many qualities, dad modeled for us the expectation of civic responsibility. He exemplified an obligation to contribute and give back to the community. For example, his long-time commitment to and active involvement in our local school system sports program and fiscal governance committees added value to the whole community.
Unquestionably, his heart and soul were dedicated to God and family. Of Dad’s many achievements and accomplishments throughout his life, we believe that his proudest moments came from presiding over the marriages of all but three of his grandchildren. Those remaining three grandchildren were on dad’s docket to be married this coming year. God had other plans.
His legacy and precedent of a life well-spent will persist beyond his three children; Tony, Tim, and Lisa; daughter-in-law’s, Barbara Quist, and Debbie Davis; son-in-law, Justin Jones, and be carried forward by eight grandchildren, their spouses, significant others and children; Colton Davis and Stephanie Davies, and Patrick and Kelsey Davis; Ashley and Chris Gustafson, Ethan and Kylie Davis and, Heath Davis and Maresha Davis; Jeremy and Lauren Jones, Jordan Jones and Desiree Potter, and Jacie Jones and Zac Brown. Great grand-children. Avery Davis. Owen, Henry (Hank), and Lucy Gustafson. Ellie, Charlotte (Charlie) Jones, and Tinley Grace.
We are grateful for the assistance of Faith Presbyterian Church, 11373 East Alameda Avenue, Aurora, Colorado 80012 and Senior Pastor Erik Ohman for their help in gathering our family and friends to honor and celebrate, his life well-lived.
