James Williams Caleb Wilfred, 82, entered his eternal rest on January 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 18, 1943, in Pannveli, Tamil Nadu, India, to Jothinayagam Williams and Grace Caleb, James lived a life defined by generosity, faith, and a genuine love for people. He grew up alongside his three siblings - Theodore, Leela, and Julian - and held especially cherished memories of the time he spent with his sister Leela during their childhood.
Affectionately known as Wilfred, he grew up in Chennai, India, he completed his schooling before pursuing higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Botany from Loyola College and a Master of Science in Botany from Madras Christian College. At the age of 23, he started his first job as a fumigation assistant at the Food Corporation of India which he really loved and enjoyed. Within 4 months, in obedience to his parents’ wishes, he cleared the bank examination and began his career with the State Bank of India as a clerk, where his dedication, integrity, and leadership carried him through multiple postings across Tamil Nadu. He eventually rose to the role of Branch Manager, leaving a lasting impact on colleagues and communities alike. After retiring early in the late nineties, Wilfred devoted himself to village ministry work in Tamil Nadu until travel became difficult.
Wilfred married his beloved wife, Devi, in Chennai, and together they later made their home in Denver, Colorado. As a husband and father, he strived to pour his energy into building a strong, loving family. Despite financial challenges, he worked tirelessly to ensure his children received a solid education and every opportunity for success. In 2015, he made the courageous decision to relocate to the United States to be closer to his children and grandchildren—a step of faith that allowed him to witness each of them grow in their own walk with God.
Active by nature, Wilfred loved being outdoors, taking daily walks, and connecting with people wherever he went. He loved the Marina beach in Chennai and spent quite a bit of time there with family and friends. A longtime member of the CSI church choir, he found joy in singing hymns in Tamil. He cared deeply for relatives near and far, always checking in on their well-being. His generosity was unmistakable—especially during the Christmas season, when he delighted in blessing family and friends no matter where life had stationed him.
Wilfred is survived by his devoted wife, Dharma Devi; his children Deepak, Navin, and Samuel; his grandchildren Elijah, Noah, Anayah, Jonathan, Yana, Jude, Joelle, Jolene, and Joslyn; his daughters-in-law Sangeetha, Archana, and Angie; his brother Julian and nieces Esther, Shalini, and Debbie. He will be remembered for his unwavering generosity, steadfast faith, and deep love for his family.
