My Story – by Robert “Bob” Muller
I was born on June 13, 1943, in New York City at the Medical Center. I was known to those who loved me in New York as “Bobby.” I was born to Hannah Mary and Herman Muller. I had two older sisters, Natalie and Dorothy “Dotty.”
I went to Catholic School until I was 5 years old, and in that same year my sister, Natalie, passed away due to complications from surgery. Shortly after, my father passed away from Tuberculosis. Consequently, my mother had no means to take care of me and took me to live at Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska.
I remained at Boys Town until I was 14 years old. At that time, my mother and my sister were able to care for me again. We lived in Newark, New Jersey for a few years and eventually moved to Miami Beach. I enjoyed playing basketball and baseball in high school while living in Miami Beach. I was injured while playing basketball and, shortly after that, I decided to drop out of high school and move with my sister and her new husband to New York City.
After a few years of living in New York City, I decided to join the Air Force. I joined the Air Force in 1964 when I was 21 years old. I spent four years in the Air Force and I liked it. I did really well in the military. I went overseas during that time to England, Thailand, and Vietnam for a total of almost two years.
After returning to the States from England, I was stationed in Florida and then in Colorado at Lowry Air Force Base. I was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Air Force. After I was stationed at Lowry, I met Martha “Marty” Martinez, who later became my wife on November 4, 1967. We had two beautiful children together, Nicole and Robert “Robb.”
After several years of marriage, Marty and I decided to go our separate ways. Soon after that I met Chris, and we married on December 20, 1998, after a very long engagement. Chris had four wonderful children of her own from her previous marriage – Sally, Jon, James and Amy.
I graduated from the University of Colorado at Denver with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in May 1972. My career directed me into the field of Human Resources for over 35 years. Throughout my career I met and became life-long friends with many people. One particular friend is Steve Fischer, with whom I worked while at Jeppesen Sanderson and also had the opportunity to work with later at Sherman and Howard, LLC.
My favorite things to do are sailing, traveling, video poker, and being with family and friends. Great memories are in Grand Cayman, Florida, California, New York, Arizona and Grand Lake.
In June of 2009, I was diagnosed with lung cancer and was told that I had nine months to a year to live. In December 2009, after a number of radiation treatments, the doctors revised the diagnosis and told me I had approximately one to three months to live. I decided to prove the doctors wrong and passed away (my way) on June 7, 2010. I was six days short of seeing my 67th birthday.
I passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by my loving family. I am survived by my wife, Chris, my children, Nicole, Sally, Robb, Jon, James and Amy, their spouses, 10 grandchildren, and my sister, Dorothy. I was so grateful to have experienced such love and happiness throughout my long life.
After all “I did it my way.”
