Shirley was born in Calhan, Colorado on her parents' farm. Her Grandmother, Susie Palko, who lived with them at the time, was the mid-wife who assisted with the delivery of Shirley and two of her three brothers.
After a move to Colorado Springs and Pueblo, her family made Denver their final destination.
She met her husband, James S Ball, in Denver, where they both attended North High School. Shirley graduated with the Class of 1952.
Shirley was a homemaker, and during the holidays she worked part-time at Montgomery Wards and Duckwall's. Her husband retired from the Union Pacific Railroad after 40 years. Both were very active in the UPRR Club No. 2. She loved sewing clothes for her two daughters when they were younger, along with embroidery, crochet, quilting and other crafts. Shirley and Jim enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling in their RV.
She was raised in the Catholic Church and loved her collection of ceramic angels. Even though her previous stroke and Alzheimer's took away her short-term and long-term memories, including the inability to recognize others, her Love of Jesus Christ helped her to always remember the words of "The Lord's Prayer" and how to pray her rosary.
In her North High School 50 Year Reunion booklet, she recorded her fond memories of her younger years - walking to/from school, riding the streetcars and later the trolley buses with cousin, Jo Ann. They had fun riding in the rumble seat of Eddie's car, another cousin.
Shirley is survived by her Brothers, Al Palko and George Palko; two Daughters, Carol (Al) Dick and Debra Grigsby; five Grandchildren, Melissa Small, Allan Jacob, Brian Jacob, Tim Grigsby and Derek Grigsby and six Great-Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her Husband, James S Ball; youngest Brother, Kenneth J Palko and Parents, Al and Helen (Tomko) Palko.
