Walter Johann Muenstermann, 88, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado passed away on February 8th, 2024 after a valiant eight-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Walter was born on October 30th, 1935 in Amsterdam, Holland to Johann Jean Münstermann and Elizabeth Maria (Bloomhoff) Münstermann.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Bonnie Lou Muenstermann; his son and daughter-in-law, Kurt and Laura Muenstermann; as well as grandchildren, Zachary and Cody Muenstermann and their wives, Michelle and Sarah. He also leaves behind four beautiful great-grandchildren, Alex, Lily, Marshall, and Teddy Muenstermann.
During WWII Walter’s parents moved him back and forth between Germany and Holland – to wherever it was safest at the time – and he survived at war’s end, the tender age of nearly 10. After some schooling, he apprenticed with his father to become a hairstylist and moved to Pretoria, South Africa in 1955 for work, then to Colorado in 1962. Following employment with Michael of the Carlyle in Cherry Creek, he moved over to Jamarlos Hair Salon, then started Cherry Creek Hair Fashions with partner Lambert Recker where he made art out of ladies’ hair until retirement somewhere around 2000.
He met Bonnie Lou Carpenter in 1962 when she went to get her hair done at the end of her first tax season as a CPA. The two quickly fell for each other and were married on January 15th, 1966. In August of 1967, they welcomed their first and only child, Kurt, into the world. Walter was a gifted painter, award-winning photographer and an avid traveler and mushroom hunter.
Walter’s celebration of life will be held at Olinger Dignity Memorial on June 28th, 2024, at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Colorado (https://www.alz.org/co), an organization that provides free programs, services, and support for Coloradans living with dementia and their families, as well as funding for Alzheimer’s and dementia research and advocacy.
