Gail Miller Moorhouse, 84, of Chester, CT, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 5,2026. Born October 30,1941, in Hartford, CT, to the late Justin and Eileen (Flaherty) Miller. She was the oldest of 6 children, raised in Glastonbury, CT. She graduated from Glastonbury High School in 1959. She married Jonathan H. Moorhouse October 8,1960, and they spent the next 65 years together. They had 2 children, Jill and Jonathan A. Moorhouse. She worked as a real estate agent in the 1970s, then worked as a paralegal for Dzialo, Pickett, and Allen PC in Old Saybrook until she retired in 2008.
She was many things at once: stubborn and tender, outspoken and quietly protective, restless and rooted. As the oldest of six children, she carried the responsibilities of birth order with a mixture of fierce guardianship and impatient humor. Those who loved her learned to accept — and sometimes admire — the contradictions that made her who she was.
She was a devoted wife, a mother who could be both the family's fiercest critic and its most reliable comfort, and a grandmother who delighted in small, private rituals with her grandchildren. As the eldest sibling she guided, teased, and safeguarded her brothers and sisters in equal measure; as a matriarch, she held the family together through laughter, stubborn counsel, and the occasional scolding that somehow always came from love.
Her passions were simple and true. Travel opened her up: she collected passport stamps, stories, and experiences in cities here and abroad. Cats were her constant companions — independent, opinionated, and impossibly comforting, much like their owner. Some of her favorites included Zak, Katya, Esmerelda, and most recently, Ruby. And when college basketball season arrived, she was all in cheering on the UCONN women’s basketball team. She knew the teams, the players, the rivalries, and the rhythms of the game, and she loved nothing more than a good upset and a living-room full of cheering. She and her sister, Ginny, attended the women’s Final Four on many occasions to cheer their team on.
Those who knew her remember her quick laugh, her direct speech, her kitchen-table wisdom, and the way she made a room feel immediate. She did not suffer pretense gladly; she preferred honesty and a well-steeped cup of tea. She could be difficult at times, but many of the family’s best stories begin with some small clash that later softened into an affectionate memory.
She is survived by two of her sisters, Virginia (Ginny) Daversa (Frank) and Laurie Connelly (Richard, “Rick”). She was predeceased by her brother Justin “Jerry” Miller (Donna), sister Karen Schiavone (Fred), and brother, David Miller. She leaves her husband Jonathan (Jon) H. Moorhouse, her daughter Jill Cassells of Deep River, son Jonathan A. Moorhouse of Chester and her beloved grandchildren, Alexander Cassells and his partner, Savannah, of Petaluma, California, and Electra Cassells of Los Angeles, California. Additionally, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Leila Saleheen, and many nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the care she received.
The family plans a celebration of her life to follow, details to be announced to friends and relatives. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Visiting Nurses of the Lower Valley or for those who wish to honor her love of animals, consider a donation to a local animal shelter or rescue organization.
