Born on September 2, 1937, in Essex, CT, Hazel was the daughter of the late Edgar and Florence Johnson. She grew up in Essex before marrying the love of her life, Gilbert, on July 1, 1957. In 1966, the couple moved to Westbrook, where they built a home and a life centered on raising their two sons. They were blessed to be part of a close-knit group of neighbors who supported each other for more than 50 years including the Retticks, the LeMarshes., the Spanilos, the Jacksons, and the Cyrs.
Hazel’s greatest joy was her family. She was the ultimate "baseball mom," a fixture at the fields who didn't just cheer for her own boys but became a surrogate mother and mentor to every player on the team. Hazel and her husband enjoyed playing golf with friends and especially loved their trips to Lake Morey. After her husband Gilbert passed away in 2011—following 57 beautiful years of marriage, Hazel found joy in tending to her rose bushes and flower boxes. She also became an avid reader, tried her hand at knitting, and loved being the Dunkin Grandma.
She is survived by her sons, Gilbert Lane and his wife Priscilla of Canterbury, NH, and Richard Lane of Clinton, CT. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Ryan Lane and his wife Miranda, and Molly Warmbein and her husband Mitchell; and her four great-grandchildren, Pemberley, Wilder, Annabelle, and Lucia. She also leaves behind her siblings, Lois Vincelette, Harold Johnson, Billy Clark, Johnny Clark, and Sharon Brown. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Gilbert, and several brothers and sisters.
Hazel will be remembered for her green thumb, her love of the game, and the steady, quiet strength she provided to everyone who knew her.
