Betty Anne Barrett of the Hamptons, NY passed away on August 10, 2023. She was 86 years old. She was born on September 4, 1936 to parents Oscar and Baxter Berger in Antofagasta Chile and raised in Santiago until the age of 19. Betty is predeceased by her brother Martin and is survived by her sister Madeline Hurtado Berger and half sisters Sandra Berger Lopez and Joanne Berger Lopez. Betty was beloved by all of her relatives and friends in Chile.
Most of all, Betty will be remembered for her support and devotion to her five children: John, Mark, Kevin, Jennifer and Gregory as well as her eleven grandchildren: Kyle, Dylan, Sarah, Ian, Joshua, Christian, Gabriel, Isabella, Luke, Delfina and Olivia. Betty was also recently blessed with the birth of her first great grandchild August and remained on good terms with her ex-husband and late father of her five children John Barrett.
During her life in the United States, Betty resided primarily in Spring Lake, New Jersey and Manhattan but was truly a woman of the world.
Betty had many interests and passions and was ahead of her time. In 1980, she started her own interior design firm with clients worldwide and became a successful entrepreneur. Throughout her life, she brought her unique vision of beauty to the world. She loved all of the performing arts, collected art and possessed a style reminiscent of Grace Kelly.
A voracious reader and bilingual in English and Spanish, Betty was generous to a fault and possessed an innocence that attracted people from all walks of life. She was a modern woman and felt equally at home working closely with world-renowned interior designers like Mario Buatta and dancing regularly at Studio 54 in Manhattan.
Betty loved animals, babies and beaches and had the rare gift of making every moment a cause to celebrate. Interior design was more than just a career, but a passionate calling. She created memorable living spaces and was a master of lighting and color and worked for such renowned clients such as Lady Chaplin, Adrianne Vittadini, to name but a few. All of Betty’s clients loved her and many naturally became extended members of the Barrett family.
Betty’s faith never wavered despite almost dying in a mid air plane collision and a bout with cancer. Her life was one of selflessness and she will always be remembered for being an advocate for the dreamers and the downtrodden. In her later years, Betty enjoyed the companionship provided by Ipek Acar of Sag Harbor NY and the two became close friends.
We are grateful for the light that she left behind. Betty died at peace on the East End of Long Island having lived a full life and beloved by all. Somewhere in heaven, Betty is smoking her signature Parliament 100 cigarette, reading a celebrity autobiography, and making suggestions about how to better decorate your home.
