

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Betty Jean Kroeper Showalter, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to all, who left this world peacefully on January 24, 2025 at the age of 92. Betty was born on September 16, 1932 in New Orleans, La and was a resident of St. Bernard Parish, Chalmette, LA for 65 years, where she lived a full life dedicated to her family and friends. Betty lived a life of love, devotion, caring and joyfulness. She is joining her husband, William Gerald Showalter, who passed on September 5, 1990; her mother, Inez Lods Kroeper; her father, George Henry Kroeper; and her brother, Albert George Kroeper (Eva Cowan Kroeper). She is survived by her cherished children; William “Billy” Gerald Showalter Jr. (Kim Mull Raimer), Robert “Robby” Edward Showalter (Susan Sentilles Showalter), Richard “Ricky” James Showalter (Laura Triche Showalter), Michael “Mike” John Showalter (Vicki Strezlec Showalter), Albert “Zippy” Charles Showalter (Pamela Lopreore Showalter), Betty “Kay” Showalter Franatovich (Danny Albert Franatovich, Deceased), George Hardy Showalter (Tammy Morrison Showalter). Her nieces; Georgia Kroeper Saucier (Bob Saucier), Alison Kroeper Arnold (Larry Arnold) and Jamie Kroeper Macheca (Johnny Macheca). Her daughter-in-law; Susan Lae Showalter. Her 15 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
Betty’s primary focus was raising her 7 children and was involved in many community service organizations. Betty was involved with the Versailles Booster Club, with her children participating in all sports for over 15 years. She was involved in managing several bowling leagues at Fazzio’s Garden Bowl, where she bowled almost every day and had many friends over her 40 years there. She was a member of the Chit Chat Homemakers Club of St. Bernard for 20 years, which is now the St. Bernard Volunteers for Family and Community. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Prompt Succor for 65 years and was deeply grounded in her faith. She traveled with her friends on many trips with the 1st Baptist Church of Covington, was a member of the Ochsner Golden Opportunity Group, a member of the Association of Senior Citizens at OLPS, and member of the Golden Age Group at OLPS. Betty loved to dance at every opportunity, including social club dances and weekly dance groups, and was the Belle of the Ball wherever she danced. Betty illuminated every room with her laughter and merriment. She loved her friendship with Eddie Maher, with whom they spent almost every day gambling, eating out and traveling to Disneyworld for many years. She was loved by all who met her. Betty lived her life with love, laughter and countless unforgettable moments. Though she will be profoundly missed, we take solace in the rich memories she leaves behind in the hearts of all who loved her deeply.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 from 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM. A funeral service will begin at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow in ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL GARDENS.
