Elton "Yogi" Levis Jr.

Elton “Yogi” Levis Jr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at the age of 87. He was the loving father of Christa Levis Ducote and Debbie Simoneaux (Kenny). Father-in-law of Ann Gogarty. Proud grandfather of Meredith Childers (Matt), Bennett Gogarty (Aimee), Abby Harrell (Jacob), Blair McIntyre (Garrett), Garrett Simoneaux (Kaitlin) and Dylan Ducote (Celeste). Great grandfather of Rogan, Griffen, Merritt, Tuck, Greyson, and Archie. Brother of Gary Levis (Amelie) and Brenda Salvador (Sal). Yogi was preceded in death by his parents Elton Levis Sr. and Roberta Cashman; his beloved son Brian Gogarty and his brother Robert Levis. He is also survived and fondly remembered by many cousins, relatives, dear friends, and the mother of Yogi’s children, Dody Levis.

Born in New Orleans, LA, Yogi dedicated much of his life to serving his community as a Major with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office, where his commitment and leadership were deeply valued. In addition to his distinguished career, Yogi was well-known for his local business, Touchè and Yogi’s Bar, a well-loved gathering place for so many in the parish. His passions extended beyond his professional life; he was an enthusiastic gambler, a devoted fan of horseracing, and a deep and true fan of classic rock. Yogi’s love for sports was surpassed only by his devotion to spending quality time with his family, friends, and especially his grandchildren.

Yogi will be deeply missed by his family and by all those whose lives he touched. He was well loved and affectionately known for his good nature and generous heart. He will be forever remembered as a loving and loyal father, grandfather and brother, who long served his parish and treasured his family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering to be held at ST. BERNARD MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Saturday, September 7th from 11:00AM – 1:00PM, followed by a memorial service in Yogi’s memory beginning at 1:00PM. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony.
