Born on December 25, 1929, Irwin lived a life of service, love, and laughter. He served honorably in the United States Navy, answering the call to serve his country during a time of great need. For 72 years, he was the proud husband of Joyce Poumaroux. Together, they built an admirable life rooted in faith and love. You could often find them together, sitting outside with a cold drink, entertaining others, and feeding everyone a delicious meal for a crowd.
It was impossible to be around Irwin and not be impacted by his outlook on life. Many will remember him for his joyful character, sense of humor, and positive spirit. He cherished the small things including sitting in his swing, reading the newspaper, an ice cold mug from the freezer, good music, and of course, milk and cookies. However, his true passion was engraving. He found great joy in creating custom pieces of jewelry. Up until his final days, Irwin reminisced over some of the pieces he designed, ensuring his family knew the meaningful stories behind them.
He is survived by his son, Johnny, and his wife, Merry. He dearly missed his daughter, Durinda, for the past eight years but kept in touch with his favorite son in law, Frank “Chick” Capella. His grandchildren, Christian Capella (Angela), Johnny Poumaroux (Ashley), and Jessica Poumaroux Province (Chris), had the honor of calling him Paw Paw and loved him dearly. He taught many jokes to his six great grandchildren, whom he adored: Camryn, Abbey, Jayde, Carter, Hudsyn, and Colette. Some of the most cherished moments were Saturday morning chocolate donut deliveries, complete with a root beer.
Those of us blessed to have known Irwin/Paw Paw/Pe Paw often say, “If I can be even half the person he was, I will have lived a good life.” That is the measure of his impact, not in titles or possessions, but in the love he shared and the lives he lifted. Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that his light will never fade - it will simply shine through us.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Monday, January 19th from 11:00AM – 1:00PM, followed by a funeral service in Irwin’s memory beginning at 1:00PM. He will be laid to eternal rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens next to his bride.
