David was born on November 14, 1943 in Salina, Utah to Joseph Dwayne Colby and Pearl Magleby. After growing up as the third of four children in Sigurd, Utah, David served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He labored in the Northern States Mission which encompassed Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio.
David attended the College of Southern Utah where he studied accounting. While a student, he was introduced by his Bishop to Claudette Brotherson to whom he was sealed nine months later in the St. George, Utah Temple.
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, David, Claudette and their new born son Troy moved to Tempe, Arizona in 1968. He began his career with Haskins & Sells and later worked for U-Haul and Miller & McCullough before starting his own accounting firm which was eventually known as Colby & Powell and still operates today.
In his spare time David enjoyed deer hunting and playing golf, but above all he was an avid baseball fan. After a stellar high school baseball career, David was invited to try out for Major League Baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates.
David was involved in a number of successful business ventures throughout the years, but his greatest joy was his family. He often spent his weekends doing random house projects with his three sons at his side. He taught his boys how to do everything from pouring concrete to installing plumbing. He even taught them how to set off smoke detectors with sawdust.
David was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was grateful for the time he had to serve as a temple worker in the Gilbert, Arizona Temple during his retirement.
David is survived by his wife, Claudette Colby; his children D. Troy (Tamara) Colby, Bryan (Corrinna) Colby, Melissa (Keate) Despain, Gary (Nicole) Colby, and Melanie Deaton; his sister Diane Holt; 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in David's memory may be made.
