

Bower, Robert James, 93 of Sun Lakes, AZ passed away on June 18, 2015. He was born in Berkeley, CA on September 20, 1921, the son of James B. and Miriam B Bower. Robert was predeceased by his sister Jean Miles and his son James S. Bower. Robert, who all knew as Bob, is survived by his daughter Lynn Bower Key and her husband Robert L. Key of Greenwood Village, CO and his three grandsons Maxwell L. Key, Robert L. Key, Jr. and David M. Key. Bob’s life was greatly enriched by his loved and significant partner, Madeline Rickerby of Sun Lakes, AZ and her family. Bob graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in History and Political Science. Additionally, he completed his Master’s Degree at Stanford University in International Relations, and pursued his doctorate from the University of Chicago. Bob completed a 32 year professional career as Assistant Deputy Director for National Estimates in the Defense Intelligence Agency of the United States Government. Bob was an instructor for 26 years in Foreign Affairs and History for the University of Virginia Extension Division. In 1965 he graduated from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA and went on to lecture at that institution. He received the following awards during his career: Outstanding Contribution to the National Intelligence Survey, the Department of the Army Certificate of Achievement, the Defense Intelligence Outstanding Performance Award, and the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal. He was loved and will be missed by all. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Valley of the Sun Mortuary, 10940 East Candler Heights Road, Chandler, AZ. Light refreshments and lunch will be served immediately following the service at Valley of the Sun Mortuary.
