Born on May 22nd, 1956, in Cleveland, Ohio, Bruce was the son of John Edward Habat, II and Delores Anne Habat (Pike). He grew up in Euclid, Ohio and attended Euclid High School and Lakeland Community College. Bruce pursued a career in emergency services, serving as a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician in South Euclid and Willowick, Ohio. Upon completion of nursing school, Bruce went on to serve for over 30 years as an emergency room and trauma nurse in Ohio, California, and South Carolina, as well as serving in roles in home medical care and as a Richland County Deputy Coroner before his retirement in 2020.
Bruce was known, above all, for his sense of humor and unwavering love and loyalty to his family and countless friends. Regardless of circumstance, if a friend was in need, there was no question that Bruce would be there to help.
A true renaissance man, there was nothing Bruce couldn’t build or repair. He was a self-taught master of innumerable crafts and hobbies, including carpentry, welding, upholstery, plumbing, electric, hunting, fishing, dog training, computer programming, and most recently, 3D printing and laser etching. Refusing to let anything that was remotely “fixable” go to waste, Bruce was never without a lengthy queue of projects both in-progress and to come. He was an avid member of Blue Iron Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, and a constant presence at his sons’ athletic events, both as a coach and their biggest fan.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Fantone Habat; his sons, Stephen Habat (wife, Kailee Yoder Habat) and Michael Habat (wife, Sarina DiNenna Habat); his granddaughter, Kate Habat; and his sisters, Deborah Habat Olshanski and Cheryl Habat Greben.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Edward Habat, II, and Delores Anne Habat (Pike); and his brother, John Edward Habat, III.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 16th, 2026, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home – Chapin Chapel at 123 Columbia Avenue, Chapin, SC 29036 with visitation from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM and a memorial service to be held at 3:00 PM.
