
CHAPIN – Dr. Loyd Ivan Hoenshell, 83, of Chapin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16, 2014. A funeral service will be held at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Methodist Church at 2:00pm Tuesday, July 22, 2014. Dr. Loyd will be placed in the church 1 hour prior to the service. Burial will be held at a later date in Veteran’s Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 3223 Sunset Blvd. Ste. 100, West Columbia, SC 29169. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Loyd was born near Miller Missouri on November 21, 1930 to William Wesley Hoenshell and Margaret Hobbs Hoenshell. He was married to the late Reiko Takahashi Hoenshell for 33 years. After her death he married Bernice Lecroy Epps of Columbia, SC.
Loyd was a 21 year veteran of the US Army and served in the Korean War. After his military service he received a PhD in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska and had careers as a college instructor and in the Civil Service with the Department of Education, working in Kansas City and Washington, DC. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking and researching political issues to write newspaper editorials.
In addition to Bernice Epps Hoenshell, his wife of 24 years, Loyd is survived by daughters, Marie Hoenshell Lamb and husband Bob, Nancy Hoenshell-Nelson and Angela Hoenshell; son, Wesley Hoenshell and wife Myrli, all of California. He is also survived by stepson, Stanley Epps and wife Christine of Chesapeake, VA and step-daughter, Denise Takach and husband Dave of Chapin; 11 grandchildren and step-grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and step great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by stepson, Edgar Epps of Columbia, brother, Lavern Hoenshell; sisters, Edith Ash and Janice Haley of Missouri and son-in-law, Donald Nelson of CA.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Carey Hite and his staff; Debbie Coutant; Linda Shannonbrook and all her health care workers who so lovingly cared for him the past few years with much love and compassion. All who knew and loved Loyd will remember his kind, gentle and loving nature, his sense of humor, his respect for everyone he came in contact with and his exemplary character.
