Marcus G. Hicks

IRMO – Services for Marcus Garlin Hicks, will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 1:00 pm, at St. Andrews Baptist Church, with interment in White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery, Jefferson, SC. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 19, 2013, from 4:00 until 6:00 pm at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Chapin Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 190 Knox Abbott Drive, Suite 301, Cayce, SC 29033 or St. Andrews Baptist Church, 230 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.

Marc enjoyed spending time with his family laughing, telling stories, and reliving days gone by, while enjoying good ole southern cuisine. Marc also enjoyed cooking gourmet dishes himself. Some of his favorite past times included reading, fishing, sailing, riding motorcycles, snow skiing, traveling the US, and watching Gamecock football. Marc loved his job, his coworkers and his friends at both Newport News Ship Building and VC Summer Nuclear Power Plant. Marc dearly loved his nieces, Candace and Rachel. He was a wonderful step dad to Joe and Zach, loving them with all of his heart and often sharing much of his insightful wisdom. He will be missed by all who knew him. One of his favorite prayers was the "Serenity Prayer":

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Marc graduated from Columbia High School in 1980, received a Bachelors Degree from USC in Electrical Engineering in 1985, followed by a MBA from William and Mary in 1993. He was an employee of the Newport News Ship Building from 1985-2000. He was employed by SCANA\VC Summer Nuclear Power Plant for the last 13 years as an Engineering Supervisor.

Marc is survived by his wife, Charesse G. Hicks; his mother Ms. Olivene H. Hicks of Columbia; sister, Stephanie H. Gruber (Terry); step sons, Joseph B. Gause and Zachary A. Gause; nieces Candace and Rachel Gruber. Marc is predeceased by his father, Garlin A. Hicks and infant son, Daniel Marcus Hicks.
