Ann spent her early years in Elizabethtown during World War II while her father was a traveling dentist for the state. In 1952, Ann moved to Charlotte, NC to study at Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing graduated in 1955. She later obtained her B.S.N. at Queens (College) University in 1957.
Ann taught Nursing at Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and Central Piedmont Community College School of Nursing and received her M.ED. from UNCC in 1975 while raising three young girls and working full time.
Ann served as the Director of the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing from 1979 until her retirement in 1996. She was an innovator in nursing education at Presbyterian. She introduced computer learning into the nursing program, encouraged married women to become nursing students, which went hand in hand with allowing students to live off campus. Later the first male students were soon allowed into the program. She encouraged change in a field where change was slow to come. Ann led the school much as she raised her children, with love and a side of firmness. She was someone you wanted to please.
Ann also loved fishing with Roy, trips to the beach, sewing, quilting, gardening and knitting. She always welcomed friends and the neighborhood kids into her home. During her later years, she stayed active with her Pomeranian, Teddy. She loved crossword puzzles, murder mysteries and Jeopardy. She quietly encouraged us all to do our best and care for everyone.
Ann is preceded in death by her husband, Roy Bivens; sister Laura Carter. She is survived by three daughters, Laura Morgan, Carrie Bivens and Terry Pouchak; three grandchildren; one great grandchild.
Per Ann’s wishes, there will not be a service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Carolina Caring Hospice or the American Lung Association in her memory.
