

Born on August 17, 1926 to Augustus and Susie Margaret Griffin High in Anson County, A.Z. proudly served in the US Army where fought in the Luzon Campaign. Upon his return to the US, he was decorated with the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
Not long after A.Z.’s return, he married Dorothy Baucom. Together they would have celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary on May 22 this month. They were long time members of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Charlotte.
A.Z. started his 37 year career with Hormel working in the warehouse before he eventually went on to driving delivery trucks. He was then promoted to his final position as a sales representative. After retirement, he found employment as a school bus driver for twelve years. He was well loved and cared for by the students as they showed their fondness and appreciation by gifting him with cards, presents at Christmas.....and hugs.
A.Z. and Dorothy loved taking cruises to Alaska, Hawaii and European countries including Norway and Russia. They also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures like a drive to the mountains in the fall to collect apples.
As a loving dad and husband, A.Z. took his family to the beach each summer and loved to go fishing.
During the last years before moving to the nursing home, A.Z. would meet his grandson Brandon for breakfast every other Friday morning. This important date was the highlight of his week. He loved spending time with his two grandchildren and then looked forward to seeing his great grandchildren upon their arrival to Southport.
Left to mourn his loss are his devoted children Donald High of Southport and Phyllis High Pratt of Atlanta; precious grandchildren Brandon High of Stanley and Emily High Weaver (Jonathan) and treasured great grandchildren Ashlynn, Xander and Xavier all of Southport.
A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024 in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte. The family will greet friends starting at 11am. Burial with US Army Funeral Honors with immediately follow the service at Sharon Memorial Park.
