

Charlotte - Barbara Greene Howell passed away peacefully at her home at 4:12 a.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014. She was born in Chambersburg, PA on Sept. 1, 1925 and spent most of her young life in Providence, Rhode Island.
A gifted musician, she studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY, and graduated cum laude with a double major in flute and piano. Barbara married Harry Jay Howell on July 14, 1948. They moved to Charlotte in 1955, where she taught private piano and flute lessons in her home for 60 years. Throughout her life, Barbara was very active in musical organizations in the community, including being choir director at Forest Hills Presbyterian and singing in the choir at some of the early Billy Graham Crusades.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Harry J. Howell; her youngest son, Richard Williams Howell; and her sister, Dorothy Greene Brock. She is survived by her children, Jonathan Ashley Howell (Margaret) and Judith Louise Howell of Charlotte, and her “adopted” daughter, Mary Packard of Gastonia.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 3200 Park Road, Charlotte, NC on Tuesday, September 2, 2014. Visitation will be from 1:00–1:45 p.m. at the church, with a service of resurrection at 2:00 p.m. Graveside services will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
