Barbara was born in Marshville on August 2, 1939 to Oscar and Kate Hill. She graduated from Peachland High School in Peachland, North Carolina and attended Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing, where she became a registered nurse.
She married Gerald Kelly in 1960. He tragically died in a car accident in 1964 and Barbara never remarried. The lights of her life were her two children, Michael and Tami. Those lights got even brighter through the love of her two grandchildren, Ashley and Amber.
With her great sense of humor, Barbara brought smiles and laughter wherever she went. She had many lifelong friends in the Charlotte area and enjoyed visiting the beach and the mountains. She and her three sisters were very close, and they loved taking trips together, playing practical jokes on each other and enjoying lots of good food.
Barbara worked in healthcare for 40 years in the Charlotte area, including 34 years as an operating room nurse at Presbyterian Hospital. Many patients will remember the excellent care they received because of Barbara’s dedication throughout her career. Later, she worked with children with disabilities and providing care to seniors.
Barbara is survived by her son Michael Kelly of Indian Trail and his wife Kathy and her daughter Tami Thomas of Rock Hill, South Carolina and her husband David; her grandchildren Ashley Thomas Jeirles of Goode, Virginia and Amber Kelly Basinger of Concord and her sister Mable Bivens of Indian Trail.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald Francis Kelly and her siblings Leon Hill, Helen Williams, Charles Hill and Catherine Delane Anderson.
A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, December 21, 2022 at 11am at McEwen Funeral Service located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte. Burial immediately following at Sharon Memorial Park.
