Clarence Melvin Helms (Sonny) was born in Charlotte in 1933 to Clarence Martin Helms and Mary Brice Willis Helms.
He graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, NC and Columbia Bible College. He was in the Army from 1954 to 1957 and retired from WSOC TV after 38 years.
Melvin is proceeded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lena Mae Helms. He is also proceeded in death by his stepfather, Frank Jackson Jr. He is survived by his sister, Marilyn (Sammy) Keesler and brother-in-law Charles (Ellie) McLean. He is also survived by his children, Scotty (Barbara) Helms, Marty Helms (Charlene), Kenny (Patricia) Helms, and Nancy (Robert) Helms. His grandchildren, Shanon, Angela, Joey, Adrienne, Jacob, Stephanie, Brandan, Matthew, Steven, Misti, Jessica, Paul Russel, Kenneth, Mellena, Roy Mitchell, and 22 great grandchildren.
