Born April 4, 1929 in Charlotte, NC, he was the son of the late Conrad Claude Helms and Eva Holler Helms. Following graduation from Harding High School, Conrad proudly served in the U.S. Navy. After completing his service, Conrad began his career with the U.S. Postal Service, while also continuing his studies at UNCC, receiving a BS in Business Administration.
Conrad and his wife JoAnn have been lifelong members of the Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, serving in several capacities as a member of Third Presbyterian Church.
Throughout his life Conrad remained an avid gardener, creating beautiful gardens in which his neighbors and friends frequently marveled. He and his father found Holden Beach where he ultimately built a second home and loved visiting there with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, JoAnn Irving Helms, and two children, Lisa Helms McGuire and Conrad Claude Helms III; a brother, Eric Timothy Helms; and six grandchildren, Kelly McGuire, Chase McGuire, Pierce McGuire, Tommy Lloyd, Conrad Claude Helms IV and Griffin Holsenbeck Helms.
A service to celebrate Conrad’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 15th in the chapel of Harry & Bryant, 500 Providence Road. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will follow in Sharon Memorial Park.
