As a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she departed this life surrounded by those who loved and cherished her. During her life, she loved on many people through her listening ear, smile, encouragement, baking, sewing and teaching. Corinne was born on March 20, 1931 to Vernon and Ona Lee Haigler of Marshville, NC. She graduated from Marshville High School in 1949 where she enjoyed various clubs, playing basketball and being voted Most Mischievous and Most Talkative. She then moved to Charlotte and began work as a bookkeeper. On June 24, 1950 she married her sweetheart, Paul DeWitt Redfern, of Peachland, NC, at a ceremony at her parents’ home. When Doug was born in 1954, she became a full-time mom and had a home-based seamstress business. She created or altered hundreds of garments for grateful customers, including creating one-of-a-kind wedding gowns for several brides. In 1971, she became the Church Secretary and Treasurer at Plaza Baptist Church where she was a faithful member for over 60 years and served in many roles. She loved people, especially children, and was cherished by many for her love for them and her encouragement. Generations of children from Plaza Baptist remember learning their books of the Bible and playing Bible Baseball in her 3rd grade Sunday School class. She was a “second Mama” to many children, as she embraced them with love and attention. She always had a smile, and she loved to laugh and tell stories of growing up on the farm with her two loving and funny parents, a sweet sister and four rambunctious little brothers.
Corinne is survived by her husband of 66 years, Paul DeWitt Redfern, and three children: Doug Redfern (Jackie) of Mint Hill, NC, Paulette Tandy (Richard) of Henderson, NV and Nancy Janes (Geoffrey) of Monroe, NC. Her seven grandchildren (Lynn Myrick, Ann Mullis, Matt Tandy, Tiffany Barrett, Kara Janes, Garren Janes and Kelsey Janes) and six great-grandchildren (Rachael Wondracek, Zachary Wondracek, Logan Tandy, Emily Tandy, Brock Barrett and Colter Barrett) were the lights of her life, and she was never happier than when she had her arms filled with a baby. Throughout the years, her family was blessed by her unwavering love and support.
Visitation will be Sunday, January 1 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Home, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212. A celebration service will be held on Monday, January 2 at 11:00 a.m. at Plaza Baptist Church, 3321 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC 28205 with Pastor David A. Gales, Sr. officiating. A graveside service will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers, love, concern, food, and encouragement over the last five weeks that Mom has been in the hospital. She bravely fought this disease with a smile and her funny sense of humor. She will be missed by many.
Corinne’s life was defined by her faith in God, and she left strict instructions that her passing should be celebrated, not mourned. She looked forward to this next chapter in her story, as she enjoys eternity in heaven.
