Donald Curtis Massey

He was born on September 30, 1981 in Charlotte to Charles Donald Massey Jr. and Sandra Coley Massey.

Curtis attended area schools in Charlotte, notably Harding University High School for his freshman year and then he transferred to West Mecklenburg High School where he attended through his senior year. After working part time as a teenager, Curtis got his first full-time adult job working as a Mechanic for Carolina Crank Shaft, where he remained a dedicated employee for over twelve years. While he was still working as a mechanic, Curtis became a handyman of sorts on the side, often dabbling in plumbing, painting, flooring, or any other odd job a family member or friend needed done. Over the years, his wide range of experience made him a jack-of-all-trades, and eventually he was able to use his proficiency as a handyman as his main job.

Growing up, Curtis loved fishing, bowling, and playing pool and basketball. He played countless games of Around the World and yard football with his siblings and neighbors over the years. In adulthood, he was known for his vast hat collection which featured all sorts of interesting logos, and for his expert cooking abilities. He loved cooking meals in the crockpot, but he was especially apt at grilling, and could make the best steak anyone ever had.

Curtis was often easygoing, reserved, and quiet, and he always kept the peace when he could. He was passionate about his family and the people he loved most, and he had a unique ability to make friends wherever he went. Curtis was a great husband, father, son, brother, and friend, and his big heart will be missed more than words can express.

Those left to honor Curtis’s memory include his wife, Heather Massey; his mother, Sandra Massey; his children, Elyjah Massey and Kassidy Massey; his stepchildren, Makayla Jenkins and Nicholas Blakeney; his siblings, Brandie Hull and her husband, Britt, and Jonathan Massey and his wife, Seterria; his nieces and nephews, Liam, Kei’Shawn, Jon’iyah, Desiray, Unique, Armoniy, Shantea’, Neviah, and Jeremiah; his maternal grandmother, Geraldine Coley; his in-laws, Margaret White and Tate Smith; and his brother-in-law, Andrew Anderson; as well as numerous loving cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives, and friends.

Curtis was preceded in death by his father, Charles D. Massey; his maternal grandfather, John Coley; his paternal grandparents, Donald C. Massey and Mary Suggs Massey; and his aunt, Susan Massey.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 3:00pm until 4:00pm on Friday, December 9, 2022 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte. The memorial service is to be conducted at 4:00pm, immediately following the visitation, in the Paul Helton Chapel at the funeral home, where Pastor Dwayne Hunt is to officiate.
