Doris Pearl Waters Aukamp, 99, died peacefully December 31, 2022 in Charlotte NC. She was born on October 31, 1923 in Good Hope, GA to the late Adolphus and Minnie Waters. She is predeceased by her husband Bill, siblings Walker Waters, Jesse Ruth Malcolm, Hazel Shropshire, Kathy Huggins, Betty Jean Waters, and Thelma Hunter, all from GA.
As a country girl, Doris came from simple, humble roots and grew to become an extraordinary woman; to lead a life of service, and later become a beautiful NY fashion model, teacher and homemaker.
After graduating from Monroe High School, Doris went to business college in GA. During WWII, she worked in personnel management for the US Army Corp of Engineers stationed in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
After the war, Doris traveled to NY with an aspiration of becoming a successful fashion model. She was very beautiful, graceful, elegant, and possessed a radiant presence wherever she went. After many years modeling, Doris became a teacher for the Academy of Charm and moved to Atlanta.
In 1950, Doris married William J. Aukamp in Atlanta and their life took them to Dallas TX, Denver CO, and finally settled in Charlotte NC where they were married for 58 years. They were very devoted to each other and made each other laugh.
Doris was a very talented artist who loved to paint as her works were proudly displayed at the Festival in the Park. She was wild about fashion, was always impeccably dressed and kept up with the latest fashion trends. She taught many women over the years how to be a lady.
Bill and Doris were founding members of Sharonview Country Club where they enjoyed memorable times and met many friends over the years.
Most of all Doris was dedicated to her family, children and grandchildren, and lived for spending time and vacations with them. She adored her grandchildren and lived long enough to see them graduate from college, finish master’s degrees and become professionals. She was the most regal, beautiful kind hearted person you ever met. Doris watched her family grow, shared in happiness and sorrow and always supported them. Her optimism of life poured into her family.
Doris is survived by her son Van Aukamp of Kelly, NC, granddaughters Ashley And Meredith; daughter Linda Sorkin, (Jon) of Matthews, NC and grandsons Brandon and Heath. She will be missed by extended family, nieces, nephews and many caring friends in GA, NC and PA.
