Phoebe was born December 9, 1926 in Soham England, to Doris Emma Lines of Soham and Walter John Withers of King’s Lynn. She grew up in Norwich, and served as an airplane plotter in the Royal Observer Corps. There she met Maurice “Pinky” Dunn, then a 2nd Lt B24 Navigator, stationed at RAF Rackheath only a few miles away- and they were a pair from then on. They returned to rural Mecklenburg shortly after the war and were married November 30, 1946 in the Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church Manse.
Pinky and Phoebe first lived in Sanford NC, then in Charlotte on Elder Ave, then moved to be near Pinky’s parents near Shuffletown. There she raised her three children, and served in various positions in Cook’s Church. Later, when the area developed, they moved to nearby Coulwood.
Phoebe was very kind and thoughtful to everyone she met. She and her sister Thelma would go to great lengths to see that the other had the “larger serving”. She often visited the sick and elderly, spreading cheer and optimism, and was particularly kind and helpful to her in-laws in many ways throughout the years. And of course, everyone loved her British accent.
She is predeceased by her parents and husband. She is survived by her sister Thelma Hadley of Norwich England; children Andrew (Belinda) of Orem UT, Alexander (Ann) of Salisbury, NC and Patricia (John Cooper) of Norwich, England, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on March 1, 2018 at 12:00 PM at Cook’s Memorial Presbyterian Church with a reception immediately following the service.
Pastor Lynn Thompson Bryant officiating.
