Born July 29, 1936 in Franklin, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late William Medford Messer, and Effie McKinney Messer, and lived her early years in Bryson City, NC.
Following graduation from Swain County High School, Betty continued her education at Western Carolina University where she earned a bachelors and master’s degree in education. Her career as a teacher began in Asheville, NC, followed by a short time in Leaksville, NC. Most of her teaching career was spent in Charlotte, NC where she taught at Collinswood Elementary School, and later served as a teacher for gifted and talented students at schools throughout the district. Betty served for many years as a member and chapter president of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for outstanding women educators. After retirement from teaching she stayed busy working as a tutor at Huntington Learning Center in Charlotte.
Betty was a long-time member of Calvary Church in Charlotte. She loved her church, her church family, and always looked forward to preparing a table for the Lady’s Christmas Tea celebrations held each year. She also served as part of the Martha Ministry preparing food for bereaved families.
The greatest joy of Betty’s life was her family. She was married for 40 years to the late Raymond Loop Glenn Jr. whom she married on December 28, 1958. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who attended numerous school and athletic activities over the years for her grandchildren. She also spent many years lovingly caring for her husband as he suffered from Parkinson’s Disease. Betty enjoyed traveling with friends and loved to go home to the Great Smoky Mountains as often as she could. The mountains were truly her home. Her rose gardens were the talk of the neighborhood with people stopping by to take pictures often.
Betty is survived by her son Raymond M. Glenn and his wife Marlene Dancy Glenn of Plano, Texas, and John David Glenn and his wife Shelby Snelgrove Glenn of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Jennifer Hatfield (Tim) of Plano, TX, Daniel Glenn (Samantha) of Fishers, IN, Andrew Glenn (Ashlen) of Van Wert, OH, Kelli Glenn of Hamlet, NC, Ashleigh Glenn of Plano TX, and Kaytlin Geistfeld (Chase) of Alexandria, MN.
