

Mrs. Crowley grew up one of six girls working on the family dairy farm in Olin, NC. She graduated from Harmony High School in 1957 and spent two years at Appalachian State Teachers College. She moved to Charlotte and began working at Duke Power. At the Belk Department Store food counter, she met the personable and charismatic Frank Crowley who worked in the sales department.
Frank and Ethel married on December 10, 1960 and had four children. Ethel was an avid gardener, a meticulous seamstress and quilter, a passionate volunteer, a dedicated homemaker and a friend to many. For nearly 50 years Mrs. Crowley was a member and volunteer at Carmel Baptist Church, she was an active member of the adult choir and a leader with the children's choir.
Mrs. Crowley was preceded in death by her parents, James Leland and Lois Arnold Vanstory; her husband of 40 years, Frank Augusta Crowley; sister, Mina Sue Williams; daughter, Helen Crowley Barton; and grandson, James Franklin Crowley.
She is survived by her sisters: Joann Vanstory Drum, Ruthie Vanstory Schauer, Betty Vanstory Dobson and Donna Jane Vanstory; her children: Gary Franklin Crowley (Martha Sue), Andrew Vann Crowley (Tricia) and Barbara Crowley Morrow (Brian). Surviving grandchildren are Travis Stedman Barton, Haley Barton Dick, Mary Claire Barton, Walter Leland Crowley, Lillian Reid Crowley, Carolyn Rose Crowley, Abigail Bethany Crowley, Jacob Andrew Crowley, Ethan Edward Morrow, Fisher Franklin Morrow and Grant Gavin Morrow. Her first great-grandchild is due in June 2023 to Taylor and Haley Dick.

A visitation for Ethel will be held Saturday, February 25, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Carmel Baptist Church, 1145 Pineville-Matthews Rd., Matthews, NC 28105, followed by a funeral service at 1:00 PM. A committal service will occur Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 3:00 PM at Forest Lawn East Cemetery, 3700 Forest Lawn Dr., Matthews, NC 28104.
