Mrs. Simpson served as a Flight Nurse in WWII with the 806th Air Evacuation Group, and took care of the wounded from the Normandy Invasion in June of 1944. She was made a Captain by the time she left the Army Air Corps. (See "Legends of World War II”.) In the 80's, she was a nurse at Sharon Towers Retirement Living Community in Charlotte.
Mrs. Simpson was preceded in death by her husband, Richard W. "Dick" Simpson, III. He also served in WWII in the Army Air Corps and became a Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Simpson retired from GMAC in 1971.
She is survived by two sons, Richard W. Simpson, IV, and his wife, Rita Parker Simpson, of Stone Mountain, GA, their children, Collins Simpson Foster (Chris), Richard W. Simpson, V (Jaime), John Parker Simpson, and grandchildren, Avery Simpson, Tessa Simpson, and Emerson Foster; and David Russell "Rusty" Simpson, and his wife, Willa Murray Simpson, of Beaufort, SC, their children, Margaret Simpson Blankenship (Allen), Jennifer Simpson Ruprecht (Russ), and Lindsey Simpson Wolansky (Lee), and grandchildren, Russell "Bo" Blankenship, Waylen Blankenship, and Russel "Rusty" Ruprecht.
Services with military honors will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 21st from the graveside in Sharon Memorial Park, 5400 Monroe Road in Charlotte.
