Mr. Mattocks, 71, died peacefully with his children by his side on March 4th at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Gordon was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina on February 6, 1941, where he was raised, and graduated from Jacksonville High School and the University of North Carolina. While in Chapel Hill, Gordon developed many friendships that remained strong throughout his entire life. He moved to Charlotte following graduation in 1963 to pursue a career in financial services and to be near the woman who would soon become his beloved wife, Katherine Atkins.
Gordon and Katherine were married in 1964 and resided in Charlotte for their entire lives, where Gordon thrived professionally at Interstate Johnson Lane and was well-respected by his clients and colleagues alike until his retirement in 2001.
Gordon enjoyed his many relationships at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, where he previously served as an elder and deacon, and at Charlotte Country Club where he was a longtime member. But Gordon’s real accomplishment was his family. His children, Kitty and Gordon, never strayed far from their Charlotte roots and gave Gordon six grandchildren whose games and events he never missed. Only four days before his death, Gordon attended his grandson Walker’s first-ever soccer practice.
Later in life, Gordon’s passion became his mountain home in Linville, the design and construction of which he meticulously oversaw. For the past several years, Gordon spent the summer months in Linville and became an integral part of that community just as he had in Charlotte.
Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine Atkins Mattocks and his parents, Gordon Lynn Mattocks and Virginia Cherry Mattocks. He is survived by his children, Kitty Mattocks Bray and Gordon Lynn Mattocks, III and their spouses William Parks Bray and Ann-Miller Byne Mattocks. He is also survived by his sister, Diane Mattocks Simmons, his brother-in-law, Leland Gannaway Atkins and his wife Bette Benson Atkins. Gordon’s grandchildren are Hutchinson Parks Bray, Elizabeth Walker Rhodes Bray, Katherine Atkins Mattocks Bray, James Walker Mattocks, Miller Byne Mattocks and Sara Katherine Mattocks.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, with a visitation to follow in Providence Hall. The burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, Gordon’s family requests that friends consider contributions to one of his two special charitable interests, The Crossnore School or Myers Park Presbyterian Church. For The Crossnore School, memorials should be submitted to PO Box 249, Crossnore, NC 28616.
