He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Yvonne Richardson Johnston; five children -Melanie Cook (Johnny), Marsha Cooper (Kelly), Mark Johnston (Kim), Matthew Johnston, Mitchell Johnston (Laura); nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Melvin was the son of the late Hugh Johnston and Viola Christenbury Johnston. His brother, Johnny Johnston, preceded him in death.
He was a longtime member of Woodlawn Baptist Church, Charlotte.
The family would like to express sincere gratitude to caregiver Dolores Smith for her care and dedication.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on September 21, 2019 at McEwen Funeral Service, Pineville Chapel. A reception will follow.
