We remember you from our first meeting in ondo as part of the wedding ceremonies of your daughter into our family. The bespoke, self-made tantalising drinks, snacks and dishes  you served us and the joy you had reciting the recipes, showed your  heart of openness, love and accommodating qualities.

Though several miles have always laid between us, your love was never distant.

 The joy we note from your voice and your face at our few meetings are enough to keep our bonds tight knit.  

Now you have rested where we could not reach,
we are consoled your spirit  has settled softly in the corners of our hearts.

Now the angels know your kindness,
They see the grace we cherished here.

And while our hearts ache with the weight of absence,
We find comfort knowing your soul is at peace.

Dear Irene, how I still miss you. I last saw you when you were an inpatient in UniMed Teaching Hospital following your fracture. Despite being in pain, you never complained, kept your cheerful smile and praised all the staff who looked after you. Thereafter, you accompanied Ajike to the States to continue management which was the best decision.
To me, you were the most refined Niger-wife I have ever come across. You were created with an abundance of talents – super in your profession as a Medical Lab Scientist, as a very good host, you spoilt us with your delicious dishes, jam, marmalade and cordial just to name a few. We all miss you at our meetings and enjoyed your jovial anecdotes. You amazed me when you showed us the kiddies’ clothes you had stitched. I am sure you had some more hidden talents.
It was great keeping in touch with you when possible and for that, I take all the blame due to my infrequent sms.
I can never stop loving you or forget you for the support and advice you gave me. Even now as I pen these lines, I am staring at the many books you left me when you left Nigeria,

Eulogy for Aunty Irene

I have known Aunty Irene all my life. In fact, she and Uncle Soji were the very first to visit my mum and dad when I was born in Portsmouth, UK, in October 1963.

Aunty Irene and our mum first met in 1961, when they were both swept off their feet by two dashing Nigerian cousins—Uncle Soji and my dad—in Finchley, London. Their friendship blossomed from that moment and continued to grow stronger over the years. Even after they moved with their husbands to Nigeria and settled nearly 300km apart—Aunty in Ilorin and our mum in Lagos—their bond remained unbreakable. We, as children, were lucky to witness their enduring friendship, often seeing them in their 50s giggling like schoolgirls at each other’s jokes.
At big family gatherings, while others sat waiting to be served, Aunty Irene could always be found in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up, helping to prepare the feast. Her approachability, generosity and warmth were constants in our memory.

Our mum often spoke with deep admiration about Aunty’s strength and grace in settling in Ondo—remote Yoruba home town in Nigeria to the Bademosi and Ogunsulire clan. It came as no surprise to us that when our mum returned to Nigeria for our father’s funeral, she chose to stay with Aunty and Uncle in Ondo. She described that visit, despite its sadness, as feeling like a pleasant holiday—such was the comfort and love she found in their home.
Aunty Irene was a remarkably resourceful woman. She brought her English heritage to Ondo, creating a thriving kitchen garden and crafting delicious pickles, mango chutney, and guava jam. We can all testify to how wonderful they tasted! She was content with her life, deeply loved Uncle Soji, and found joy in the simple pleasures of home and family.

In their later years, Aunty and Uncle lived with their beloved daughter Ajike. Though they sorely missed  life in Ondo, they were proud and at peace, surrounded by love and care.
Aunty Irene, may your gentle soul rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear about the death of your mother.  She was an inspirational pioneering lady and a wonderful aunt to me especially when I was in my teenage years.  She took me to my first Shakespeare play and my first BBC Prom concert.  Her Open University degree was one of the first in the country and her personal professional interest in science and biology probably accounted for my degree subjects and my vocation as a teacher/lecturer.
I have so many fond memories of your mum (and dad) and have shed a few tears recounting them as I guess you have as well.  She was one of the best people I have had the pleasure to know and to be related to her will always remain a privilege.
I know she will always be with us in our hearts and memories.

My memories of Aunty Irene go back to fond childhood memories of visiting in East London, and to her warm, no-nonsense but kind character.

Aunty was always hospitable and I admired how she became so much a part of our family, and how she adopted Nigeria, its culture and traditions and made them her own.

She will be greatly missed, but we give thanks to God for a long life well-lived. Rest in peace aunty.

I have only fond memories of  Aunty Irene. 
She was a kind, gentle and generous soul and no December in Ondo was complete without her delicious fruit cakes, packed with currants and raisins, which she brought whenever she visited with Uncle Soji at Christmas. 
My parents would light up whenever she arrived, and she was deeply loved and respected in our home.

Accept our utmost sympathy on mummy Irene’s passing. E ku aseyinde and your children will do more for you both. Mummy stood solidly with her late husband till the end. An Amazon of a woman. In our estate in Ondo where we were neighbors, mummy walked every morning with daddy then and the dog along the untarred road of the estate not minding the dust that engulfed pedestrians. I admired her resilience in Ondo being a non-Nigerian. Her love for her late husband radiated in her encounters with everyone. Rest on mama in the bossom of the  Almighty. I  remember Aunty Irene with much fondness.  A highly intelligent woman who could turn her hand to most things using her creative gifting.  I remember wearing home made clothes made by Aunty often receiving compliments from my peers what a fabulous garment I was modelling.  If The Sewing Bee was around in the 60’s Aunty would’ve been a strong contender for the title.  Although there was one garment I was less enamoured with - a knitted swimming costume, I’ll leave that to your imagination.
Irene was a devoted sister to my mum and a wonderful Godmother to me.  I always knew that she covered me spiritually.  The biggest honour for me was when Irene stepped in to be “Mother of the Bride “ on my wedding day as my mum had passed.  I felt so proud to have her on the top table representing my side of the family.  I was so sad when she and Uncle Sogi moved to Nigeria but the miles between us never diminished the love and care she bestowed on my family.  She always remembered our birthdays and indeed my children (Irene’s Great niece and nephew) were always so touched that she sent texts for their birthdays, congratulated them on the birth of their children and sending regular updates on the lives of Ajike, Hilary and Obi, evidence of her pride in her family and the joy they brought to her life. So I thank God for the life Irene lived and I am so grateful that I got to call her Aunty.  May she rest in peace and I look forward to seeing her again on that great and glorious day when we will rise in glory and spend eternity together.

Over six decades ago Uncle Soji and Auntie Irene met, dated, fell in love and got married to each other. This was the time many English considered Africa to be a dark and mysterious continent. Some with an inkling of geography might ask if Nigeria was part of the Caribbean. However and because of Auntie Irene’s spirit of adventure and being a risk taker, she agreed to marry the bearded pipe smoking lad from Nigeria. The rest is now history. They were together and in love for more than six decades.
Subsequently, they both went to the universities and returned to Nigeria with a beautiful daughter. Auntie Irene was a living Biblical Ruth “Your God is my God and your people my people” She thoroughly became assimilated into hYoruba culture in general and Ondo culture in particular. After they retired from the University of Ilorin, they resided in Ondo.They were known as a lovingly couple referred to as Okoyibo and Oyinbo by the Ondos. Their going to the market to purchase foodstuffs was a classic demonstration of love and understanding. Auntie chose what supplies to buy, while Uncle haggled and negotiated the price and Auntie finally paid for the supplies. On Saturdays, after sometimes picking their mails from the Post office mailboxes, they drove to Owena to purchase vegetables. They were one.
Auntie Irene was an adventurous, tough, witty and loving lady.She instilled discipline and how to be a lady to her daughter Ajike, and it shows.  The Ogunsulire family is highly honored to have her as a member of our family. She was a delight, joy and a lovely lady to be with anytime. She was preceded in death by her husband. Now, they are together over there in heaven never to part anymore. We thank her for being a good wife to our late uncle.We pray the God will forgive all her earthly sins and grant her eternal rest in peace.

A Tribute to My Dear Sister-in-Law, Irene

I find it hard to believe that Irene is gone. She was more than a sister-in-law to me, she was my friend, my tea-drinking companion and my partner in countless simple pleasures; cheese and crackers, yam pottage, coconut rice, books. Those little moments meant so much.
Although we lived in different towns, Irene and I saw each other at least twice a year for over 30 years ,mostly during her visits to Lagos, at family occasions and when we visited Ondo. Those meetings were always full of easy conversation. When she and Soji moved to Ondo after their retirement, I always looked forward to seeing them during my own trips there. Their company was one of the highlights of every visit. Our husbands were so close.
Irene and I understood each other well. She never made a fuss about anything and faced every inconvenience with quiet strength. That was simply her way. I always admired her courage in leaving her homeland to begin a new life in a very different country.
I will miss her deeply, her presence, her companionship and the gentle warmth she brought into all our lives.

Dear family and friends,

It's with a heavy heart that we gather today to celebrate the life of our  uncle Soji Ogunsulires' beloved wife, Mrs Irene Ogunsulire. She was a light in our family, and her warmth and kindness touched everyone who knew her.

We will never forget her ability to make anyone feel welcome and loved. Whether it was at a holiday gathering or a family function, her generous spirit made our family feel whole. Her laughter was infectious, and her genuine smile was a gift that we would always carry with us.

To Ajike, our loving sister and her wonderful daughter, we can only imagine your grief, but I hope you find some comfort in the beautiful life you built together. And to all of us who were lucky enough to be part of her life, let's honour her memory by carrying that same warmth and kindness forward. She will be deeply missed, but her love will forever remain in our hearts.

Her legacy lives not only in our memories but also in the values she instilled in our family. Thank you,Aunt Irene ,for your love, your guidance. You will be greatly missed.

Tribute to Our Lovely Aunt Irene

Aunty was such a lovely person… always warm, always kind, always gentle. We never saw her angry -she took things in her stride. We remember the warm welcome we received whenever we visited her and Uncle in Ondo. She always seemed to have a baked treat on hand (like chin-chin, or her amazing fruitcake), but the real treat was the warm ambiance she and Uncle created in their home. Within minutes of arriving at their house, we were relaxed and at ease.

Even when Aunty became elderly and thousands of miles separated us, she would still send WhatsApp messages to ask how our Mum was, and how we were doing.

We pray that God shines his perpetual light on you, Aunty.

Aunty Irene was gentle, warm and quietly strong. An Englishwoman who made Nigeria her home, she embraced our family and our country with grace and affection. 

I will always remember her humour, her impeccable manners and of course, her famous lemon and lime jam which no one has ever been able to replicate. 

When I brought my newborn daughter home from the hospital, Aunty Irene was one of the first family members to hold her,  a moment I have always treasured.

Our family celebrates a beloved aunty who loved her husband, daughter Ajike, and granddaughter Obioma deeply; who lived with quiet dignity; and who left behind warmth and memories that will continue to sweeten our hearts just like her jam.

Rest in perfect peace, dear Aunty Irene. You were deeply loved, and you will be deeply missed.

I wish to celebrate the beautiful life of Irene, who lived a long and fulfilling life. Her gentle spirit and unwavering kindness touched many among Nigerwives. She possessed a remarkable wisdom, always offering thoughtful advices.
Nigerwives in Ondo state will really miss meetings in her house in Ondo town, Nigeria, with delicious meals she used to cook for us.
