

Mr. Eakes was the son of James Zachariah Eakes, Jr., and Margaret Wooten Eakes of Charlotte, who preceded him in death in 2001 and 2000, respectively. He is survived by his sister, Peggy Eakes Johnson and husband Roger W. of Cornelius, NC; nephews, Brian A. Johnson of Greensboro, NC, and Timothy A. Johnson, his wife Jane Y., and great nephew, Master Hunter Caleb, of Carmel, NY. He is also survived by one uncle and aunt, Benjamin F. and Bobbie Wooten Toler of Rocky Mount, NC, and 16 first cousins that include Beth Eakes Martina, David L. Eakes, and Charles D. Eakes, all of Charlotte.
Mr. Eakes graduated from Olympic High School in Charlotte in 1976 and earned his BS in psychology from Wake Forest University in 1980. After college, Mr. Eakes returned to Charlotte and worked as a counselor at Amethyst, the former addiction treatment facility operated by Carolinas Medical Center. He then returned to school at Queens College for a second major in accounting.
Mr. Eakes was a licensed realtor in Charlotte in the 1980’s and worked as an agent for the former Kerley and Associates firm. At the time of his death, he was a partner in the Industrial Electric Company of Charlotte, a commercial and industrial contracting firm begun by L. Garner Eakes and James Z. “Shorty” Eakes, Jr.
Family and friends will celebrate Mr. Eakes’ life at a memorial service on Saturday, June 18, at 1:00 p.m. at Myers Park Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. H. Stephen Shoemaker officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Memorial contributions may be made to Myers Park Baptist’s RAIN (Room at the Inn) program. Checks should be made payable to Myers Park Baptist Church, 1900 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, with a designation to RAIN in memory of Mr. Eakes. Contributions may also be made to The Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203 in memory of Jim and his beloved Pete.
