

A son of the late Edward Jefferson Gravely and Margaret Elizabeth McCoy Gravely, Jim was born February 11, 1942 in Wilmington, NC. He attended UNC-Chapel Hill where he completed his undergraduate studies and then furthered his education receiving a PhD in Philosophy from Tulane University. His continued keen interest in learning afforded him the ability to speak six languages. He was also an accomplished violinist who performed for a time with the Charlotte Symphony.
Jim is remembered for his love for books, as well as his vast collection of model trains. He also had a special place in his heart for cats.
Much loved by his family, Jim is survived by his sister, Nancy Gravely Biggers; and his brother-in-law, Oren A. Biggers; as well as his nephews, Oren E. Biggers and wife Miranda, and Brant Biggers and wife Anne; and great-nephews and great-nieces, Ellis, E. J., Lizzy and Margaret Biggers.
A service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7th in Harry & Bryant’s “Chapel in the Oaks”, 500 Providence Road. His family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service. Jim will be interred with his parents and his infant brother, Thomas Edward Gravely, in Sharon Memorial Park.
