James Thomas Groll

Jim was born and raised in Elizabeth, NJ. Following graduation from St. Benedict Preparatory High School in Newark NJ, he furthered his education at Villanova University where he earned a

degree in History. Shortly after his college graduation, he enlisted in the United States National Guard, and proudly served his country for 4 years.

In October of 1972, Jim married Mary Louise Gallagher, and they began their life together in Westfield, NJ. Jim began his career with Equitable Life Insurance Company as an underwriter in the early 1970’s. Jim’s outstanding career led him to work in multiple cities beginning in Manhattan, NY then to Westerville, OH, on to Monroe, CT and finally to Charlotte, NC. He retired as Vice President and Chief Underwriter of the Charlotte office in 2001.

Jim adored his wife, MaryLou and was a devoted father and grandfather. His passion was the game of golf and played weekly at Providence Country Club, as a member. He also looked forward to the annual softball tournament with his childhood friends, while spending time at his summer residence in Avon by the Sea, NJ.

Jim will be remembered for his guidance, level-headedness and most of all, love for his family. Jim was a true gentleman, a title seldom held.

Surviving are his children, Thomas F. Groll (Megan) and Caitrin M. Groll; grandchildren, Joseph and Ada Groll; as well as many extended family and friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his lovely wife of 38 years, Mary Louise Groll, and his parents Thomas Groll and Mary O'Brien.

A funeral mass to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, January 16th at St Philip Neri Catholic Church. 292 Munn Rd E, Fort Mill, SC 29715. After the mass, Procession to Forest Lawn East Cemetery 3700 Forest Lawn Dr, Matthews, NC 28104.
