James is survived by his loving spouse of 45 years, Deborah, his children Kelly and Jeffrey, his son-in-law David Pena and grandchildren Alyana and Kamila. He loved his daughter's dogs Cookie and Honey. He was predeceased by his parents James and Julia McGovern of Charlotte, North Carolina.
He graduated from St. Joe's Regional High School in 1968 and received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering degree from the Newark College of Engineering in 1972. Mr. McGovern earned his Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1975 before relocating to Charlotte and later opening his own consulting firm as a licensed Civil Engineer.
In 1968 as an undergraduate; James was initiated into the Kappa Eta Chapter of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity at the Newark College of Engineering.
James was passionate about his career and about the quality of work he provided to both his associates and his clients. Balancing a career and family life he never missed his children's practices, games or swim meets and routinely put others ahead of his own needs. Whenever a baseball or basketball coaching position became available he would continuously volunteer to provide his leadership to his children or others.
James had a fond love for all things related to sports and especially enjoyed cheering on the Yankees/Mets and the Carolina Panthers. He also habitually hit on 16, always doubled down against a bust card, and on occasion came close to being caught counting cards while putting his mathematical skills to good use.
