

Born on August 25, 1933, in Mint Hill, North Carolina, James lived a life rich in love, service, and dedication to his family and community. James was the son of Reuben James Mullis and Eunice Bartlett Mullis, who instilled in him the values of hard work, kindness, and generosity.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, brothers Richard and Johnny, and sister Betty. Despite these losses, James' spirit remained unbroken, and he dedicated his life to uplifting those around him.
James is survived by his devoted wife Virginia (Jenny) Hagler Mullis; cherished daughter Kimberly USAF Retired; loving son James (Jimbo) and wife Ginger; cherished grandchildren Lindsay (Andrew) Merritt and Matthew Mullis; and precious great grandchildren Lilly, Landry, Finleigh, Moses, Eve, Ellie, and Hadley. Also left to cherish is memory is James’ sister Jean (Jim) Barbee, along with a host of nieces and nephews.
Family was the cornerstone of his life, and he often spoke of the joy they brought him. James' education began in his hometown, where he graduated from high school and later pursued some college courses while serving in the United States Navy as a proud veteran of the Korean War. His military service was a source of pride for him, and it shaped many of the values he carried throughout his life.
After his time in service, he worked diligently on the docks for a trucking company, showcasing his strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family. Beyond his professional life, James was a dedicated community member. He spent more than twenty years as a coach for the Mint Hill Athletic Association, guiding and mentoring young athletes. Under his leadership, his team made it to the semi-finals of the Little League World Series, a testament to his dedication and passion for encouraging youth in sports.
James was known for his peaceful demeanor and his readiness to help those in need. He often went out of his way to assist stranded motorists, providing them with gas, phone services, and clothing—all acts of kindness that reflected his generous spirit. He was a great listener, always offering a compassionate ear to those who sought his advice or simply needed someone to talk to.
In his free time, James found solace in nature, often taking long walks in peaceful woods. These moments of reflection were cherished by him, providing a profound sense of tranquility that he carried into his interactions with others.
James' funeral will be held on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at 1:30pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel, located at 10500 Park Road in Charlotte. We invite all those who knew and loved him to join us in celebrating a life well-lived and honoring the legacy of warmth and kindness he leaves behind.
The family will greet friends starting at 1pm.
Burial with U.S. Navy funeral honors will follow the service at Crown Memorial Park, located at 9620 Rodney Street in Pineville.
As we bid farewell to James David Mullis, we remember a man whose heart was as vast as his generosity, whose peaceful spirit inspired many, and whose legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those he touched. May he rest in eternal peace.
