In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his daughter, Betty Jo Jolly; and grandson, Allan Newton.
James was born on September 14, 1930 in Charlotte, NC.
He was the founder of the Newton Machine Company, Inc. in Charlotte. He retired from his company in 1995 and flying a small plane was his hobby. He served in the US Army for two years and was a 50 year member of Westgate Masonic Lodge #738, Oasis International, and the York Rite Templar in Charlotte. He was a member of Westview Presbyterian Church of Mt. Holly for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Grace Weathington Newton; and two sons, James E. Newton III and wife, Lynette, and William A. Newton and wife, Teresa. He has four surviving grandchildren, Karly Newton, Shannon Davis, Evan Newton, and Tayler Newton; and four great-grandchildren, Drew Banks, Cassidy Banks, Jayden Newton, and McKenzie Newton. He is also survived by a very special friend, Harold Roberts; two nieces, Judy Jackson and Belinda Perrigo; and two nephews, Steve Jones and David Jones.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00am until 11:00am on Thursday, July 6, 2023 at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home, 4601 Freedom Drive in Charlotte.
The graveside service is to be conducted at 11:15am, immediately following the visitation, in Forest Lawn West Cemetery, where Pastor Bill Abrams is to officiate.
Family and friends are invited to a lunch at Westview Presbyterian Church in Mt. Holly after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Masonic Home for Children at Oxford.
