John L Langford

He was born September 7, 1922 in Laurinburg, NC. He is preceded in death by his parents John Lewis Langford and Viola Wallace Langford and former wife Athlyn Batten Langford; a son, Michael Lewis Langford and brother, Boyce Wallace Langford. Surviving is his wife of 19 years, Mary Funderburk Langford.

John grew up in Columbia, SC. He graduated from Batesburg/Leesville, SC schools in 1942. Over the years, he completed courses of studies at several universities with a final executive BA at UNC Chapel Hill, NC. At the age of 4 he performed on radio station WIS, Columbia, SC, and continued public professional appearances for over 69 years playing several instruments. Thereafter, he engaged in radio and television with Big Band performances for over 30 years in NC, SC, and VA on a weekly basis at numerous public places.

In business he was employed in 1942 by the US Government War Manpower Commission as Supervisor of high security secret training of 135 trainees. For over 42 years he was engaged in secret contract/construction security of several nuclear, HB Bomb and power plants construction for several large corporations in the world; his last being with Duke Energy in 1990 before retiring.

Starting in 1950, he served as president, chairman, director of political activities in the Democratic Party - local, state, and national groups of over 2,000 members. He was group chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Trade Show chairman of the NAPM doing public relations for 5,000 members for about 50 years.

He was a 40 year 32nd degree Masonic-Scottish Rite, noble Shriner with the Oasis Temple in Charlotte, NC.

As a Christian he was a member of Sharon Road Baptist Church, 6411 Sharon Rd, Charlotte, NC 28210 where a memorial service will be held on Friday, November 28, 2014 at 2:00 pm, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.
