(Dickie)
Dickie McCorkle went to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, January 25, surrounded by his wife, Patti Glover and son, Britton McCorkle. Dickie was born February 5, 1947, in Charlotte, NC to the late Joseph and Adele McCorkle.
Dickie is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Patti Glover; son, Britton McCorkle; and his sister, Donna McCorkle. He was blessed with two grandchildren, Britton Lane McCorkle, Jr. and Chloe Lane McCorkle. His world included many – extended family and lifelong friends. A special thank you to Toni Wicker for her gifts of love, support, strength and friendship throughout the years.
Dickie graduated from West Mecklenburg High School in 1965. He was an outstanding athlete playing baseball and basketball. He played 2nd base for American Legion Baseball, Post 380, almost winning the chance to go to the American Legion World Series but lost to Post 9.
Anyone that knew Dickie loved him! He was an outgoing, life of the party, big hearted man! Those who called him “friend” knew that he would show up for them in times of crisis. He was very caring, generous and loyal to his friends. Dickie’s best friends, known as “The Group Five’” consisted of Earl Armstrong, Reece Helms, Tony Moreland, Rick Harris (AKA Humphrey). Later they adopted Phil Able to “The Group”. They were a tight group, “bailing out” each other when needed.
He was a man with a “Heart of Gold” but wanted no glory for his acts of love and care. Close friend, Phil Able, recalls being in California while his mom was seriously ill in Hickory, NC. Dickie arrived at the hospital with a dozen yellow roses for Phil’s mom. Needless to say Mrs. Able never forgot the kindness of Dickie McCorkle.
Then there is the time when Dickie underwent hip surgery and could hardly get around himself but traveled to the beach to care for his friend, Earl Armstrong, who was terminally ill. The list could go on and on……a nephew calling Uncle Dickie for a new little play car because his mom couldn’t afford it……the sister-in-law receiving a “top of the line” Kitchen Aid mixer because her husband was diagnosed with cancer and he knew the two baked cakes & pies together. Now that is a man with a BIG HEART!
In recent years, he loved spending an afternoon at Brazwell’s Restaurant with his son, Britton and Tom Wicker, co-owners of the restaurant. Thank you to the “Brazwell Girls”, Christy, Kelly, Tammy, and Mallory for filling his life with fun and joy as they took special care of Dickie. And, of course, he was a great tipper!
He is a veteran of the Vietnam War and served our country in 1968 while stationed in Pleiku, Vietnam.
Dickie’s career included many years in the restaurant/bar business, as a realtor for Allen Tate, and retired as an appraiser for Pearsall Appraisal.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Dickie will be held on Friday, January 29th at 1:00 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Home in Pineville NC, with Reverend Britt Hadley officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 12:00 – 12:45.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to The American Heart Association.
