A graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, Joe practiced as a registered architect, serving several firms on projects in the United States and around the world. He defined himself as a contributor to community through the built environment. On a variety of stringed instruments, he played, toured, and recorded with bright lights of Bluegrass music, an American art form he loved and supported. An expert on Porsches and other automobiles, he entered vehicles into concours and competitions. He truly loved the art and the act of driving. After taking early retirement, he began a new phase of contribution as a volunteer; both as an architect and as a craftsman for Habitat for Humanity, and as a consultant and fundraiser for WNCW public radio, and other causes and events, especially health-related, whenever asked. In his travels, residences, work and activities, he sought to grow in friendship with others, and strived to live by the tenets of the Gospels.
Above all, Joe was most proud and most devoted to his wife and daughters. His love, engagement, and support to them and to his family was his driving motivation, which was matched only by his faith. He is survived by his wife, Laura Haynes Diviney of Charlotte, NC, daughters, Jennifer Diviney of Charlotte, NC, and Alison Diviney of Brooklyn NY., brothers Thomas Diviney of Labadie MO, Richard Diviney of Westport CT, three brothers-and five sisters-in-law, 16 nieces and nephews and their families. He is predeceased by his parents Thomas J. and Alma H. Diviney, and two sisters, Susan Diviney and Paula D. Burke.
Visitation will be held at McEwen Funeral Service and Pineville Chapel at 10500 Park Rd, Charlotte, NC 28210 on Monday evening, July 31st from 6pm-8pm.
His ecumenical funeral service and burial will take place at Glencoe United Methodist Church, 601 Glencoe Church Loop Road, Summerfield, NC 27358 on Tuesday, August 1, at 1:00 pm.
Because he believed that the best gift of health to a person is a home, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 3815 Latrobe Road, Charlotte, NC 28211.
Requiescat in Pace.
