Joseph "Joe" Scales

Joseph Andrew Scales (Joe), 97, passed away at Asbury Care Center on December 29, 2011. Joe, son of the late Alexander Andrew and Emma Wolfe Scales, was born September 22, 1914 in Monroe, NC and spent his adult life in Charlotte, NC. He graduated from Duke University in 1936 and was an avid Duke basketball fan, attending the ACC Tournament with friends for many years. Joe was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific with the US Army while his wife, Gwen, was serving with the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP).

Joe had a long career with E.B. Stone Finance Co. and later owned and operated his own business, Mart Specialty Printing.

He loved playing golf and cards at Carmel Country Club where he was a member for over fifty years.

Joe was a long time member of Myers Park United Methodist Church and during his last years he especially enjoyed the visits of his Stephen Minister.

Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn Cline Scales and daughter, Sharyn. He is survived by his son, J. Andrew Scales and wife, Judith W. Scales, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Sharon Memorial Park, 5716 Monroe Rd., at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 3, 2012 with military honors. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at the graveside.
